Where to Begin

First of all -I had a wonderful time at my weekend at Watson. There were about 50 women there all with one thing in common-our passion for quilts. We sewed, laughed, ate, shopped and I know I learned so much from my experience there. One thing I will definitely do differently is cut fabric before I go next year. I spent most of Thursday and Friday (OK, I was shopping too!) cutting out a 30's repro Sunbonnet Sue/Sawtooth Star Quilt. I also completed a flannel top, a small Christmas wall hanging, and basted a "baby dress" quilt (pictures to follow).

As you can see, there were many talented women there. I have included some of my favorites. I still have a tough time juggling pictures and text on Blogger so I will describe my pictures here.

The first group are shots of the southern tier of NY state. The weather was just gorgeous! The next group are various people and projects. The last pictures are of all my shopping goodies. Enjoy! Oh-thank you, Monica, for my scarecrow!

Surprise in the Mail

This past weekend, I was at my quilt retreat at Watson Homestead in Painted Post, NY (about 2 hrs. southwest of here). When I talked to my husband that evening, he said I had gotten a HUGE package from Australia! Well, I just thought about that package all weekend and when I got home yesterday, he was NOT kidding! Oh I wish my pictures could do these goodies justice. As you may remember, I joined Helen's Stitcher's Angel Swap and if you look carefully at the first picture you will see that Lyn from Bluebird Quilts, who sent me all these beautiful things also made little tags with the swap tag. How clever is that!

It is blurry but it is still so cute! Look at all the wonderful things she sent me:
I have always planned to make an armchair caddy, but look, now I have one. My gifts are in my favorite fall colors and her hand work is just impeccable. I just want to keep saying, "Look! LOOK!"

The bag is a perfect size for carrying little projects and I have plenty of those! And look below at the pin cushion: there is a pocket for the scissors- I have never seen this style before-they are so neat!

Look at my little angel: When my daughter saw it she asked if I had said I collect angels. I didn't mention it but this one will look perfect on my shelf!

Look at the little star candles-they are silver!, the little soap, a matching pin, and even angel notes!

Lyn, everything is just wonderful; I can't find the words to tell you how much I appreciate the time you put into crearing all these little gems. Thank you so much! I love it all!

Fall in Viginia

This is my friend Mimi, who lives in Virginia. I have made here 4 small quilts to decorate her new home. This is her quilt for fall. I posted her spring quilt last year. I sent her summer quilt in July and her winter quilt went with her when she moved in 2006. I know you cannot see the quilt well but I want you to notice something else interesting in the picture.
It is October 8. Here in CNY I am wearing a sweatshirt and at night I am wearing socks to bed. Mimi is in shorts and is wearing NO SHOES! Her trees are all green. Now I hate really hot, hot weather, but something about this is just not right.

Last post before I leave for my retreat tomorrow. I am all packed. My machine and other goodies are in the car. I plan on leaving about 9:00 tomorrow morning. I have my camera and I will tell you all about my quilting adventure when I return!

A Perfect Fall Day

Yesterday was the kind of day I look forward to each autumn. The sun was shining; the weather was crisp and the trees were in full splendor. So my husband and I took a ride to the apple farm. This has been an annual trek since before we were married (29 years this Nov!) and a trip our kids eagerly looked forward to. This year it was just the two of us.
But this year I have decided that we need to something new to the tradition:
A stop at the quilt shop! Actually I go many more times than once a year, but we were just a few miles down the road and gas IS very expensive! Meet Judy, owner of the shop, and Patty an employee and my friend:

And when we got home I made a pan of Apple Crisp. Yummy!

OK, I admit that I put a few too many pictures of my grandsons here but you have to admit that they are adorable. Well here are a couple more!

Michael went to an outdoor show last week and won a lifetime hunting license. My daughter says that this is a big deal. Here is the picture they took when he went to get it.

They are just too cute! BTW, in the last picture of Dylan he is wearing a cute little sweater with a snake applique. That cute little sweater was made by my oldest daughter, Adrienne.

Keeping Busy

Well! I have been so very happy sewing in my nice, clean, and organized room that I have been ignoring my blog. I have completed quite a few projects: Mimi's fall quilt is in the mail. When she sends a picture I will post that. I made two quilts from a quilt kit I bought at Cottonseed Glory in Annapolis, MD. They are packed and ready for my quilt retreat planned for next Thursday. I joined the Angel Swap organized by Helen at Hugs and Kisses and completed a few treats for my partner. They are on their merry way to.....? That has to be a surprise. And I made a wall hanging to bring as a gift to the retreat. Whew!

I am very excited about the retreat: it will be my first. The teacher in me has taken over. We were always taught to overplan so that is exactly what I did. I have packed 5 projects to work on and I will only be gone 4 days! I guess I won't get bored! The retreat is a collaboration of 2 local

quilt guilds. It is held about 2 hours from here. From what I hear, there are plenty of snacks, all night sewing marathons, great ideas, a mystery quilt and even an indoor pool. I promise to take plenty of pictures.

And speaking of pictures: you know what is coming! Enjoy!

The Sewing Room....After!!

Well, I am finally done! I have dusted, vacuumed, sorted, sorted, Sorted! and thrown out a lot over the past week or so and here is the fruit of my labor. What do you think? This first picture is a view from the door. The ironing board on the closet dor is great for most of my ironing. I get out the big board for larger projects. Under the window is a counter my husband attached to the wall;that is my "desk" and is great for my laptop.





These pictures my cutting area and sewing table. I have a small shelf against the wall. I labeled and sorted into baskets notions such as elastic, ribbons, buttons, etc. I tend to move the sewing table to suit my mood but the way it is now is good for general sewing and machine quilting.



























These are pictures of the closet. My husband had originally installed the shelves for fabric which I had put in baskets (to sort fabric by color). While it was great to throw the fabric in the baskets, I soon ran out of room and had to stack baskets and things got messy quickly. After a while the fabric was just getting thrown into the first basket I saw. Now I have my books on one shelf and WIPs and fabric kits on the other shelves. Right now the books are in ABC order but I am not going to make myself crazy if a book is not put back in the exact same place.















This is a big part of my fabric collection. It does not look like a whole lot but I folded well over 300 pieces of fabric, each a minimum of 1/4 of a yard. So I figure I must have at least 100 yards of fabric-just on these shelves!

While the folding took a long time, I am going to work very hard to keep my fabric organized this way. There are many advantages: first, it takes up much less room than my fabric baskets did. I can kind of tell by feel approximately how much I have. When I pull out fabrics to audition them, the amount showing gives me a good previw of how it will all look together, w/out having to fold and unfold. And, I feel like I am shopping when I look at my fabric!





























Do you like my curtains? I made them a few years ago with my Viking D1. The border looks like a shelf full of flowers. My husband and my oldest daughter, Adrienne, helped me so much when I first decorated and moved into the room in 2005.

Finally, this is the area on and above my cutting table. I just wanted you to see the organizer on my cutting board-it is the silverware basket from my old dishwasher! Also, this is my collection of jelly rolls and charm squares. (I need to find a permanent spot for them)

Making Progress??

I have been busy working on my sewing room but it is going more slowly than I expected. The room is looking worse instead of looking better. So far I have folded lots of fabric (so far I have used 325 comic boards!!) and sorted through my books and magazines. When Adrienne was here this weekend, she took several yards of fabric with her. I have one tote so far full of fabric I am donating somewhere and I bought a new trashcan today to use as an indoor dumpster-if I can bear to throw anything away. Here are a couple of pictures:

me about 16 hours to get it all folded. I have about 20 pieces more to fold; then I need to take
care of charm squares and jelly rolls.










These are the magazines I am keeping.
The containers are from Staples: I went in
to price magazine holders and I thought they
were too expensive so I asked the manager if I
could have the displays from the back-to-
school items. I spent about 15 minutes
condensing the folder display into less
containers and in return, I was able to take the
holders. (I hope what I said makes sense!)

Have you seen the tv show "How to Look Good Naked"? I have never watched it but I think that taking pictures of my sewing room may come close to taking pictures of yourself naked. The room is pretty bad but I am thinking that if I show them I will work harder to get to the point to take the AFTER pictures. So this is the plan:

1. Sort, fold and organize fabric. I got myself some comic book boards to fold the fabric around. I got 200 of them for $17.oo. This is much cheaper than boards advertised for quilters. They are also acid free.

2. Go thru my books and magazines. I have some that I have forgotten about and some magazines I don't think I have read thoroughly.

3. Clean out some of the stuff that is really not sewing related. I just don't know where to put it...

4. Give a good dusting and vacuum, clean the windows and woodwork (before I put things away).

Today I will pick up my living room (hardly used) so I can work out there on the fabric. Since Adrienne is coming home I don't want a huge mess up there. I can bring out fabric as I work on it and once it is folded it will look a lot neater. (Ok this is internal thinking-did I really need to post it?)
